THE CAMPIT'S ANNIVERSARY IN CHILE
We’ve always been big travelers. When we got married five years ago, we made travel a part of our vows. We said we’d select, at random, places that we’d travel on our 5-year anniversary and our 10-year anniversary. It was a symbolic statement saying that we’d be together and that we’d be living the lives we wanted. My wife and I chose 5 destinations – all non-traditional places. One of the places we selected was Easter Island. That’s how we decided on this trip – we made the promise and we followed through.
Santiago was our launching point for Easter Island. We spent 3 nights there and we did a lot of hiking. Before getting to Santiago, we envisioned it was going to be like Peru - a little underdeveloped in terms of modern buildings. It wasn’t at all. It was like going to France. It was really metropolitan with skyscrapers, long boulevards similar to the French style, and they had a ton of parks there. Plus, I think they have the largest consumption of ice cream in the world! It seemed everybody was eating it. Smog was pretty high, but it wasn’t as much of a problem up in the mountains.
Easter Island was pretty incredible. When you see all of those heads, it makes you believe aliens really exist! It all looks so impossible. It’s similar to Stonehenge, but so much more than that. It’s really awe-inspiring.

My first impression of Easter Island? I thought it was a lot like the TV show Lost. There’s a small airstrip. The only way to get around Easter Island is by car because all the monuments are kind of stretched out. Even though it’s a small island, it's not walkable. It seems very untouched. There are some paved roads, but the majority of the roads are dirt. The cars are all stick shift. It takes a while to traverse the island because of the long, windy roads, there’s no interstate. You do feel like you’re on an island nation separated from the rest of the planet which I think is awesome.

One of the most surprising things about Easter Island is definitely the fact that it wasn’t a modern place to go, but it wasn’t inconvenient. Yeah, the roads weren’t paved, there is no internet, and there wasn’t a large downtown, but it wasn’t inconvenient, in fact, it was almost refreshing. You lose modern life. It was a cooler experience than we thought. We didn’t have TV in our rooms and now that I think about it, I don’t think I saw one TV the entire time I was there. For anyone that wants to disconnect, go there.
When it comes to remote places like this, you really do need a reason to go there specifically, especially when it is so unique. For us it was our anniversary. We made a promise to go. It’s easier to choose a more common vacation, so you have to make an effort or a promise to do it and then follow through.

We’re thinking our 10th anniversary is going to be a South African safari.
