volcanoes national park | where gorillas reside

Following breakfast, drive to Volcanoes National Park. The afternoon is yours to relax at your luxurious lodge overlooking the rolling hills and volcanoes of Rwanda. This great volcanic massif encompasses six active and three extinct volcanoes. Most notably, though, it’s the residence of around half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas — some 400 of them, in fact. The park itself has a longstanding connection with gorilla conservation. It was the base for the groundbreaking work of primatologist Dian Fossey, which began in the late 1960s and is portrayed in the evocative book and film Gorillas in the Mist.
